As of the time of publication, the DMRE had not officially released the 2020 occupational health and safety statistics. The 2020 industry safety performance statistics in this report are therefore provisional.
Up to 14 December 2020, there were 58 fatalities reported compared to 51 fatalities at the end of 2019. This marks a provisional increase of 12% in the number of fatalities year-on-year. While it is not possible to calculate the fatality rates until the safety data is finalised, it is estimated to be worse than 2019 as there were significantly less people at work in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
