Gold Fields – Building a Respectful Workplace

30 August 2023

Gold Fields, a member of the Minerals Council South Africa, during 2022 carried out an independent review into its workplace culture by independent experts Elizabeth Broderick & Co, a foremost UN gender expert.

This gave employees and contractors an opportunity to voice their experiences and concerns with bullying, racism and sexism at all Gold Fields operations in South Africa, Ghana, Australia, Peru and Chile. The review is an integral part of Gold Fields’ transformational culture journey, which started in early 2022. This culture journey has Respectful Workplace as one of our four priority themes, and it is supported by Gold Fields’ expanded focus on psychological safety as a critical element of ensuring the overall safety and wellbeing of our people.

The report showed that over the past five years almost half of Gold Fields’ employees surveyed experienced some level of harassment, bullying and discrimination at their place of work. Gold Fields extends its heartfelt apologies to its employees and those of its contractors who had to go through this experience. It has undertaken to improve the working environment to ensure that these experiences are not repeated, including implementing all 21 recommended actions by EB & Co.
