National Day of Women in Mining 2021

19 August 2021

Committing to “Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights for an Equal Future”

The first National Day of Women in Mining was launched on 21 August 2020, with the aim of putting the advancement of women in mining on the agenda within the Minerals Council, in mining company boardrooms and within mining companies themselves.

The Minerals Council launched its Women in Mining initiative in early 2020 to enhance the representation and development of women in the mining industry. The stretch targets set at the launch of the initiative, agreed to by member companies, were to ensure that the percentages of women in mining at least double by 2025.

Key focus areas include fighting gender-based violence and femicide; implementing gender-inclusive policies; Monitoring company performance on commitments; initiating unconscious bias training to transform organisational culture; pulse check surveys to assess the situation on the ground; and assessing the availability of appropriate PPE and built physical environments.
